Information
Ponies came with stickers between 1984 and 1986 in the US but continued for another two years in the UK and parts of Europe. The final year of US stickers changed from Puffy to Flat stickers.
Puffy stickers came on a square of backing paper and inside a little plastic envelope. They were either sealed with a piece of sticky tape or left open.
It appears that all Puffy Stickers that came with ponies were made in Taiwan. Many but not all Puffy Stickers have stamps on the back. For example the Puffy Sticker of Whizzer does not have a stamp.
Of the stickers I have none of the ones in German or French have a country of origin on them. The ones marked "My Little Pony" with no pony name don't have anything written on them either.
Flat Stickers have serrations on two edges which suggests they were made on a roll and seperated into individual stickers when they were added to the pony's packaging. None of the ones I've seen have any country of origin on them.
The original backing paper of puffy stickers often has an indentation of a circle where the sticker sits.

Examples of Original Stickers.
Purry stickers are composed of a plastic backing then a round, sponge like pad followed by the a slightly concave piece of plastic with the picture on. The padding is in the center and doesn't cover the whole area so the front gently curves towards the edge. Hopefully you can see this in the bottom right of this image where the light is catching the edge of the pad and where the plastic is bending away from the camera
The top can become detached from the bottom quite easily so if you have to remove it from something you need to make sure you keep all the pieces together. |
Flat Stickers are made of thin transparent plastic that's easy to bend and can also stretch or tear.
It has a small border around the image. Taking these off of surfaces can be difficult due to the rounded edges. You need to do it slowly and watch for stretching and ripping. |
Cross Section of a Flat Padded sticker.
The padding is more of a pulpy material, like soft mashed paper. It's sandwiched between two layers of paper one of which has the sticker on. You can see that this one is seperating a bit at the bottom. These stickers only appear to be in French, German or Spanish. The "Pierre de Lune" in the gallery has a backing which only covers the sticker itself and is in two parts to make peeling the back easier. |
Flat paper stickers are just a single sheet of paper with an adhesive back. They come on a square of paper.
